Hi Julia,

It's always nice to see a smiling face of someone that I have met in person! It was short but so nice.

I'm still feeling really "poorly" as my mom would say. Hoping  to be much better in a couple of days. At least the antibiotic I'm on should stave off a secondary infection which I often get after a cold. Mine usually settle in my ears or sinus. No time for that as I leave for 2 weeks in Italy on October 4th. I'm going to lay low just doing what needs to be done this week. I'm mostly packed. Just need a pedicure and a few snacks to take along.

Last night Mike went to a 50th anniversary celebration of the middle school where we both taught. Mike also attended the same school so his total time in that building was 34 years! Three as a student and 31 as a teacher. I felt too lousy to go; didn't want to share the crud. Disappointed as it would have been fun had I felt good.

Nothing else here. Just trying to feel better. Headed for some chicken broth thought it's not even 9:30am here.

Aloha my friend......I did not know you were ill. I guess I missed a lot the week I didn't have a computer! I'm so sorry. I sure hope you are back to your usual energizer bunny self by the time you are to leave for Italy. You have waited a long time for that adventure.

Take good care.........

With much aloha,

Karen

I'm trying to think positive. BEtter to get the crud this past week than the day before I leave. Can't imagine a long plane ride with plugged ears, sore throat and aching sinuses! If I could just swallow without it hurting so bad. . . .

Aloha beautiful Julia and all of my OFF family.......Well, it is just 6:45ish here on Maui, and the sun just popped over the top of Haleakela......it is almost blinding! It makes the ocean look like it's made of shimmering gold. Sunday mornings the outrigger canoe clubs row past on their weekly adventure.......always a beautiful sight to see against the sunrise.

Yesterday I happily got bit by the cleaning fairy and got busy on my lanai. Our manager who had promised to take my plants down to his garden during the tenting, forgot to. So I had three beautiful palm plants steadily turning brown and ugly. I don't blame the manager because he had SO MUCH TO DO during the tenting including inspecting all 79 condos to make sure everyone was out and their stuff bagged correctly. He had to go in through a window in one unit because his master key would not work.

So, I got my poor sickly plants into the trash and then swept and mopped the lanai and put the wicker furniture back so now it's ready to enjoy. In fact I think I'll read the Sunday paper out there.

This morning I'm determined to get into my closet and pull out all the things I don't wear any longer, or those that are too big, etc. I can probably take four big trash bags full to Savers. Since I had my tummy tuck, I can now wear pants, shorts, etc. without having to hide my belly under something "tentlike" so I'm more prone now to wear shorts, or long pants with a cute little top than my usual casual muu muu......not the big mama kind, but the little skinny kind! Ha

Now I'm getting signals to get off my buh-tocks and into my closet, so I'll say to you all ....I hope you have a wonderful Sunday........and that something magic happens in your life you can tell us about tomorrow.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Hi Julia and my OFF family:

Here I am, bringing up the rear as usual. I didn't get up til 10:30, had my protein drink, read the newspaper, now I'm having coffee and surfing, checking out my e-mail, waiting for mom to call as she usually does on Sunday about noon Central time ... she's late! It's already 2 p.m. here, so she's an hour late ... I should do what she did to me when I was driving home ... she dead in a ditch at the side of a road! Naw, I won't do that. Last week she forgot ... thought about screaming at her ... I know she's 85 and gets hysterical ... but only at me.

Anyway ... I have no plans. Day 2 of vacation ... football, baseball, laundry, hanging around the house. I'm being lazy. It feels good. I do have to make some turkey roll-ups and protein balls. I have this good recipe I want to try from eggface of malted milk protein balls. Got all the ingredients two weeks ago, just haven't done it. No time. This is the week.

We have a big thing going on in Grand Rapids called ArtPrize. Artists from all over are exhibiting art all over the city, some indoor, some outdoor. We have a couple of things in front of the newspaper office. There's one exhibit called "The Furniture City Sets the Table for the World" ... it's a giant table and chairs over a pedestrian bridge. It's pretty unusual ... looks Alice in Wonderland-like. There's also something called "Nessie" that is a sea monster stuck in the Grand River ... that's pretty interesting too ... from I've seen from the photos. A lot of this stuff is walking tour, and maybe I'll hit some this week, but my walking isn't the greatest. There is a shuttle bus, but you have to pay $15 to use the shuttle bus for the whole tour. If you're interested, you can see some of the stuff at mlive.com/grpress and then click on the ArtPrize links ... there are plenty of them. (I think that get you there ... if not, let me know and I'll look it up ... I'm doing that from memory.)

Anyway, time for the White Sox  game ... why I'm still watching them, I don't know. They sure stunk it up yesterday. Got off to a 5-0 lead and then lost it 12-5. They could play spoiler but they are dogging it to the end of the season.

Karen, hope you feel better ... you leave for your trip too soon. My nephew and his wife are been to Italy several times and just love it there.

Anyway, have a good day.

Hi all,

Nothing much going on. We finally got much needed rain here in Houston last week. Our cool front got the high in the 80's low in 60's but it is back in the 90's this week. That means I can swim for awhile still. I hope to be able to swim in my apartment pool through October. Swimming is pretty much the only exercise that does not make my knees hurt and besides I love to swim.

I was going to join Curves again and told the Dallas Sistahs that plan. I was a member pre-op but quit due to the money. The fee to join and then a monthly fee of $45 or more is a lot to pay. I believe I have to be realistic about my financial picture and that negates Curves. I liked it cause it is user friendly for obese folks. I have a gym I can join for $35/year so I just need to make myself go and ride the reclining bike, walk a bit on the treadmill, use the EFX, and do a few upper ext weights. Ok, that is what I will do. Once I get my body moving again on a regular basis, maybe I can get some of this regained weight off. For now, I plan to look on it as one thing at a time and just get moving.

My eharmony experience is still not feeling positive. My 3 months trial ends in couple of weeks and I don't believe I will renew it. It is just too expensive when I have no positive results. I may have to give plenty of fish and or yahoo personals another try.

I saw myself in the Dallas pictures and compared them with the 2007 Dallas pictures and was horrified. I mean I knew I had gained 50 # but seeing the difference in pictures was huge, literally speaking. I need to print out the new ones and the old ones and put them up as an incentive to use my "tool" to lose the 50.

Hope those who went to Dallas OH conference are having a good time. Once I realized my trip to Austin is the first week of October and did not conflict with the OH meeting this week, I also realized I just could not afford the time. I worked yesterday and today still trying to catch up from my Dallas trip three weeks ago. I was sick after my return from Dallas and missed some work then.

Glad to hear Karen S is back in her condo with her kitties. Sorry that Karen C is sick, hope you get better soon.  Glad to hear Candy likes her new hours, and is sleeping better. It was nice to hear Laureen's son and boyfriend met and hit it off.

That is all for now.

Karen,

Our community college gym offers very inexpensive memberships for seniors. I think my brother and sis in law go for something like $10.00 per semester.  It's through our community schools I believe. When they go they haven't had any problem with anyone giving them a bad time. Most of the time the young people are there later in the day.

Remember, the hardest part is just getting there. I have to get started again as soon as I get back from my trip. I'm sure I'll get plenty of walking in Italy!

Anyone that  you might talk into going with you? At my gym (Women only) there are a group of us "experienced ladies" who go about the same time each day. We kind of support each other and look forward to seeing each other. After you go for a while I'm sure you'll find someone.

What time do you go to work? I find that even when I was working that I did best first thing in the morning. I would go to the gym about 5am, come home, shower, dress, have breakfast, and I was good to go. It's always been hard for me to convince myself to leave the house once I get home in the afternoon or evening. I want to snuggle in and hibernate, especially if it's cold and dark~ Karen, you can do it. My tool still works when I choose to do what I'm supposed to do. It's just a bit harder than it was the first couple of  years. This is where we find out what we are made of. And I think we are pretty tough women! My goal for my yearly next August is to weigh less than I do right now even if it's just one pound!

I posted a pre WLS picture of myself on the fridge a few months ago as a remember of where I do NOT want to go back to.
